GTA 6 Game Informer Cover Story: Is It Epic? [Exclusive]

Hurricanes are coming to Vice City, and the GTA 6 Game Informer cover story is how we know. It went live on September 29, 2026.

So this isn’t breaking news anymore. It’s a few days old. Still, the details keep growing on me, and I wanted to sort what’s confirmed from what’s just fan noise.

Weather, wildlife, a giant map, and 12 fresh screenshots. Let’s go through it.

Why did the GTA 6 Game Informer cover story hit so hard?

Rockstar barely talks. That’s the whole reason this matters. Usually we get a trailer, a few screenshots, and then months of silence.

Then Game Informer revealed its cover on September 25. Issue 382 shows Jason and Lucia in art made by Rockstar. Writer Marcus Stewart interviewed several Rockstar lead designers for it.

The digital version went live on September 29 at noon Eastern. It runs 14 pages and comes with 12 new screenshots. Print copies follow in the coming weeks.

Quick reality check, though. This is a magazine feature. It isn’t a new trailer, and it didn’t move anything on the calendar. The GTA 6 release date is still November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced.

That’s under seven weeks away, so yes, the hype is loud right now.

Also, the timing matters. Rockstar usually lets other people do the talking, so a long interview with its own designers feels rare. Because of that, every small detail gets picked apart.

Here’s my take. The trailers sold us crime. This story sells the place itself. Honestly, that’s the smarter pitch for a game this big.

Confirmed facts: what the GTA 6 Game Informer cover story locks in

Here’s the clean list. Everything below comes from Game Informer’s own pieces or from outlets quoting them.

Wildlife170+ animal species

Now let’s break the big pieces down.

Hurricanes, wind, and rain: the weather upgrade

Let’s start with the headline. Tropical storms and hurricanes can hit Leonida. Insider Gaming quotes Rockstar’s weather designer: “Heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain.”

Then it gets cinematic. Rain runs off rooftops and lampposts, thunder rolls in, and lightning flashes across the clouds. I can already picture driving through that at night.

The everyday GTA 6 weather system got a glow-up too. The weather is now local, so one part of Leonida can be sunny while another gets soaked. Conditions also stick around instead of vanishing on a timer.

There’s a new wind system as well. Hair and debris swirl on rooftops, gusts ripple across water, and swamp grass bends. Puddles stay after rain, and you can even spot rainbows after a shower.

Game Informer covers the storms in its own free exclusive on tropical storms and hurricanes. Read it for the source wording.

Why does local weather matter? Because it changes how a city feels. Picture a storm sitting over the bay while you drive through dry streets. That sounds way more alive to me.

One screenshot shows a seaplane over the Keys with a storm front and two lightning strikes behind it. It’s gorgeous.

Over 170 animal species, and a few that bite

Leonida has more than 170 animal species. That includes over 60 kinds of birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles.

These four are named so far:

  • Manatees
  • Flamingos
  • Pelicans
  • Alligators

Native animals share space with invasive ones. Think green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and even rhesus macaque monkeys. Yes, Florida really has those.

Some species have never appeared in a Rockstar game before. Animals also get new looks, like iridescence and bioluminescence, plus new fur systems. You can track certain animals labeled Rare, Discoverable, or Legendary, but Rockstar hasn’t said what they are.

Still, numbers only tell half the story. What I want to know is how animals act. Do gators ignore you or chase you? Nobody has answered that yet, so I’m keeping my excitement on a leash.

For context, Red Dead Redemption 2 was pitched with more than 200 species back in 2018. So GTA 6 wildlife is closing in on that number, inside a crime game. That’s wild to me.

A map twice as big, and plenty to do

Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut says the map is around twice the size of GTA 5’s. It’s also Rockstar’s biggest by some degree, per Insider Gaming. There are no exact miles yet, so treat the GTA 6 map size as a ratio, not a number.

Garbut’s pitch is density, not just size. Rockstar says it obsessed over rooftops, alleys, and interiors until buildings felt real inside and out. I’d honestly trade a bigger map for that.

VICE’s rundown lists these confirmed activities:

  • Base jumping
  • Billiards
  • Gyms
  • Kayaking
  • Mini golf
  • Scuba diving
  • Street and off-road racing
  • Zoos
  • Airboats and jet skis
  • Hikes as dates for Jason and Lucia

That’s a lot of variety for a series known for crime. Some of it will probably feel like side-quest filler, and some will become the stuff we replay for fun. Either way, I’m curious. Mini golf made me grin. Zoos too. Meanwhile, I’ll probably waste an embarrassing number of hours on both.

What the 12 screenshots from the GTA 6 Game Informer cover story actually show

Game Informer lists 12 images. However, Push Square counted 13, probably because it included the cover art. So 12 is the right number for screenshots.

Here’s every scene, plus what stood out to me.

#SceneWhat caught my eye
1Downtown Vice City at nightSearchlights over the Sahara Arena, plus a waterfront Ferris wheel
2Jason and Lucia on a beachPacked sand and a man running past with a flag
3A biker barNeon, patches, and a pool table in the back
4Jason on a chopperMasked, pistol out, bikers pouring from a roadhouse
5Jason with a baseball batA shop that is clearly having a bad day
6Lucia with an assault rifleMasked and watching a deal at a pickup truck
7A crop dusterFlying low over a field near a water tower
8Grassrivers wetlandAlligator, spoonbill, buck, and a sky full of birds
9A swamp dock at nightAlligators swimming right under two guys
10A hunter on an ATVRifle on his back, watching deer at a stream
11A waterfall hikeA couple on a wooden bridge, plus a dog walker
12A storm over the KeysSeaplane, dark clouds, and two lightning bolts

My favorites are numbers 8 and 9. The wetland shot packs more animals into one frame than some whole games. Then the dock shot makes me want to stay far away from water.

Meanwhile, shots 4 through 6 are the classic Rockstar mood. Masks, guns, and a deal about to go wrong. Fine, but I’ve seen that energy before.

The beach and hike shots surprised me more. They show a calm, normal side of Leonida. That contrast is what makes the crime hit harder. A quiet beach day makes the next gunfight feel louder.

Also, look at the backgrounds. Birds in the sky, people on the sand, a dog on the trail. Rockstar fills every corner, and that’s how a world stops feeling like a set.

These GTA 6 screenshots also back up the text. The weather, animals, and activities all show up on screen, so Rockstar isn’t just talking.

Rumors, guesses, and what the GTA 6 Game Informer cover story left unsaid

Real talk. I haven’t found a credible leak tied to this drop. What’s left is guessing, so let’s label it that way.

Here’s what is still unclear:

  • Storm frequency: Nobody has said how often hurricanes hit.
  • Mission impact: It’s unknown whether storms change missions or the story.
  • Hunting: Only one screenshot hints at it. Rockstar hasn’t detailed it.
  • Exact map size: No miles or kilometers yet.
  • Rare and legendary animals: Their identities are still secret.
  • PC version: None announced.
  • New trailer: None came with the issue.

The hunting question is the loudest fan theory. A rifle and a deer in one image is not a confirmed feature. It’s a hint, and a hint isn’t a promise.

Honestly, this is where hype gets sloppy. A storm in a screenshot proves storms exist. It doesn’t prove a mission is built around one. Keep those two ideas apart and you’ll dodge most of the nonsense.

So if you see a post about a “hurricane mission leak,” be careful. Until Rockstar says it, that’s fan fiction.

Is the GTA 6 Game Informer cover story free to read?

Yes, in the Game Informer app. Launch day was messy, though.

At first, people thought the story sat behind a paywall. Then Game Informer posted that it was free in the app. IGN also reported that the site and app crashed when the story went live.

If the app lags, don’t panic. Big launches overload servers, and this one clearly did. Give it a few minutes, then try again.

Here’s how to read it:

  1. Download the Game Informer app.
  2. Open the Grand Theft Auto VI story.
  3. Or subscribe if you want the print issue.

Print copies come with a subscription. Game Informer says the issue will only be available for a limited time. Collectors, don’t sleep on it.

My verdict on the GTA 6 Game Informer cover story

Think of this like a review of the reveal itself. These scores are my opinion, not official ratings.

CategoryMy scoreWhy
Weather9/10Hurricanes and local storms are a big promise
Wildlife9/10170+ species is huge for a crime game.
Map info7/10“Twice GTA 5” is cool, but there is no exact size.
Screenshots8/10Beautiful, though a few feel familiar
Gameplay detail6/10Almost nothing on how storms affect play

Overall, I’d call it a strong 8 out of 10. It gives us a living world, not just a heist.

Would I call it perfect? No. A magazine story can only show so much. Still, it’s the closest Rockstar has come to describing Leonida like a real place with real habits.

The big miss is gameplay. We learned what Leonida looks like. We didn’t learn what the weather does to you.

Last thing before you go

The GTA 6 Game Informer cover story didn’t give us a trailer or a new date. Instead, it gave us a world with real weather and real animals.

Seven weeks of waiting just got a lot more interesting. I’ll be rewatching old trailers with storm clouds in mind.

That’s enough for me, for now. Check back at GamingMuzz as more Rockstar news lands.
